I just tried to solve this issue myself and also could not figure out to make  
lighdm in Trisquel 8 point to a different image for the login screen  
background wallpaper. However, I have been able to change the wallpaper by  
going to /usr/share/backgrounds and overwriting the "flidas.jpg" image with  
my own, using the same name.

You may want to backup the "flidas.jpg" image before you overwrite it! :D
