I started to use MyPaint. I had a few complaints of this software too though.  
In my opinion the devs are far more considerate of users than GIMP's. At  
least I can confirm easily which layer I am now selecting. It is a matter of  
how degree you can consider users' something, not about technique nor fancy  
functions. Sigh.
