It would be nice if the text indicated that 1.1.x and 1.0.x are not compatible, and that the user should determine which one they need for their application. I have a library that depends on openssl. I have not yet started the (difficult) task of porting to 1.1.x. I've had two cases now where my users downloaded 1.1.x, thinking it was just an incremental improvement - just the latest and greatest.
