volume controls?

 The X version of RealPlayer on my system will remain silent until
 I touch the volume controls (make it louder or more quiet); that
 is _always_ the case.

 TRPlayer, after having finished buffering remains silent as well,
 although the (s)tatus shows as 'playing'. Is there anything I can
 do about that, or should I just forget the program?
