Illinois Apologizes to Mormons
A delegation of Illinois officials, led by Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn, traveled to Utah to express official regret for the 1844 murder of Joseph Smith Jr., the founder of the Mormon church, and the expulsion of Mormons from Illinois.  The Illinois House approved a resolution, a week prior, expressing the regret and Quinns delegation carried that message to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. An AP story quoted Quinn, "The people of Illinois are tolerant. They believe in religious freedom, and they are people of many faiths. If there have been wrongs, we should right them.'' Illinois is home to some 51,000 Mormons
