The Hurricane Lessons:
Gisele, you ask what has this disaster in New Orleans taught me? The
biggest lesson is the Biblical reminder that we are citizens of a foreign
country, if we are believers. It is not our job to make this world a better
place to go to hell from. No matter what the attitude of the people we are
witnessing to, their attitude is not the issue. One thing made clear in the
book of Isaiah, is that the people did not wish to hear what he had to say,
yet God told him to tell them anyway.
It also taught me that trying to do good for people is a hopeless
undertaking, yes, one must help, (like the good Samaritan), but do not
desire or expect gratitude or thanks for what you do. In fact the mere fact
that people are suffering is proof that God has not abandoned this world,
yet. Remember Stephen said, "Forgive them for they do not know what they
are doing." How can a lost person living in darkness know what they are
doing? Why expect gratitude in this world if even believers fail to be
thankful? Suffering is a double-edged sword; it is designed to bring those
who do not consider God to the point of consideration, and those who know
God, to the point where they apply the teaching from the Bible that they
have learned.
I have read many auricles about the in-gratitude, hostility, arrogance,
anger, entitlement, and rotten attitudes of those helped, and of the blame
for everyone from the Mayor, Governor, White people, Black people, and even
the President. All of this blaming is normal and expected, it is the
thinking of the world. However, what should we expect in Satan's World,
people to take responsibility for their own actions, that people would know
how to act? The world always blames others for their own mistakes and
errors. This is why in the book of Isaiah God says, "My thoughts are not
your thoughts."
The only intelligent life that I have seen in this fiasco is the work of
one Mark Dawson who jumped in his car drove to the shelters and started
telling the people about Christ. He understood that nothing happens without
it first going through the Hand of God, and that right in his lap were
thousands of people that needed the simple gospel of Jesus Christ.
He was not there to change their customs or culture, not there to shame
them into gratitude or to teach them manners, or be helpful in the sense of
water food or clothing, (all of which were provided). He was there to give
them eternal values, something he could have never given them in New
Orleans. The truth without religion, the ultimate meaning of life, free and
without strings, the living God of the universe, the person of Jesus Christ.
So what have I learned? Our Job is to give the gospel, first and foremost.
The Bible is filled with people in disaster who will not listen to the
teachings of Scripture, yet one thing we know is that God permits disasters
so that a remnant can come to know Him. The mass of humanity will always
see the Gospel as foolishness whether in disaster on in prosperity.
It is not our job to determine if they are worthy to hear, or to stop
spreading the Word because of their negative or unappreciative attitude.
The disaster is from God. We represent Him at this time and in this place,
Grace and Mercy is our message. The Holy Spirit has already convicted them
of Sin, Righteousness, and Judgment. It is our job to tell them what Christ
has done, Jn.3:16 and Eph.2:8-9 and warn them of Jn.3:18, It is that simple.
