Dean:Do you understand that the 'moralism' (morality: keeping of laws and, thereby being a person of character) makes for a civil society but, only being indwelt by the Righteous One will generate a righteous society? These are, of course, not one and the same.

Amen! Good to have you as moderator. Take a deep breath and think 'ecumenical'!

cd: Thank you Lance and Bill-I think that is worthy to note the even the masses like the idea of law until that law hinders them from carrying out their wants-then their ideology of that law changes to one of opposition.Laws are made on the bases that the right of others need protection from those who have no respect for others nor their property. The problem we have in modern society is now law extended to protect those that are of a deviant nature such as homosexuals or even murderers-and their claim of we cannot help it as we were made this way.
The murder claims that his childhood was so horrible he could not help but to murder. The homosexuals go even back father than the childhood blame game by saying they were born with a disposition to do wrong and cannot help but be who they are. Therefore both groups claim that society should have understanding for these acts of deviant behavior and protect them as they practice clear wrongs. The problem is that these acts infringe upon the rights of society and removes protection from not only our children but the innocence of society as a whole. The murderer takes away from the right to life of the innocent and the homosexual takes away from the innocent of society unto corruption.Satan did this same thing in the garden of Eden-He murderer man by removing him from innocence and the ability to return to innocence thereby destroying mans soul.Christ came to cleanse that wrong and restore that innocence.
The old saying of sin begetting sin as dog begets dog is true. That is why it is so important to tell others that this behavior is wrong and that one has the inbred ability too not commit such acts ,and to even point out that this behavior leads to destruction of self and others ,but to claim one cannot help but to be this way and there is no punishment for these sins (ie.all transgression of laws)-one is harming his fellow man even as the one who remains silent and doesn't pressure society to conform to what is right. The Bible -in it's beauty-applies this pressure in 1 Peter.4 :18:

1Pe 4:18 And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

I have often thought that the one's spiritual health can be checked by how one holds respect for laws, and the authority that allows for the policing of society to keep those laws. A law breaker justifies the breaking of laws to retain his image of a "good self"; often by claiming that others do wrong so their acts of wrongness are acceptable;" I am acting no different than others" they claim:" and because others do not suffer punishment neither should I"-hence sin begets sin. To make the false claim that all my future law breaking (sins)will bring no punishment is the same as saying that all my past law breaking didn't cause harm to others or even offence to God.
For laws to work and protect the rights of others there must be two constants in place. 1:The belief that the law breaker will most assure get caught for his crime. 2: That the punishment will be swift in retaliation for the crime committed. To remove either is to weaken the strength of the law and the same as stating;" the law doesn't exist for me so neither does the punishment".This is true in society and on this site- as the Moderator it is my task too make sure law also reins here knowing that evil will attack that law and my authority to police that said law and if one hasn't noticed- this has already begun. The same as it happened to my predecessors for the law is always a hindrance to evil. Just a thought for Sunday morning-May God bless you all.

Dean,  let me encourage you to continue.   If you need to take a break,  then that is what you must do.

I want to express my appreciation to you for the change in attitude that has been obvious, now, for the past several months.   I doubt any on this forum is not aware of your change of pace in these discussions.

I have been a member of TT  for two years, now.   The past couple of weeks  (at least) has produced perhaps the best continuing discussion on TT.  It  has been great.

David has been more consistent in the graciousness of his writings   -- at times as profound as any on this forum.   Bill has taken more time to contribute as well.   My writings are more of a distraction,  I fear,  but I actually write for my children !!   They have asked for a collection of what I think  --  not that it is  anything special other than I am their ‘ol man  ---   so I write for them.   I had a little scare a couple of weeks ago that has renewed my commitment to leaving them a “hard copy” legacy , if you will !!!!

The value of the current discussion has been as much your doing as any on this forum.   What is more important,  Dean,  an attitude that encourages continued sharing or a well written abstract about some theological high point?   I give credit to the former.   And you , sir, are the head of the class on this one………………  in my opinion and without debated.

We each hope that the other will come to agree with “us.”   But surely there is other benefit to our thinking and studying and praying and maneuvering and writing than the friendly persuasion of the opponent !!   Maybe something personal  ?   I hope.  Definitely true for me.

Just a note from your friendly counselor:  impatience is always  --  ALWAYS -  a breach of the principle expressed in I Cor 13:5  which reads  “love does not seek its own  ….”   From an utilitarian point of view,  I do not see a more useful scripture as a pastoral counselor.   When I get impatient with you  - or Judy or whoever  --  it is due to pe rsonal failure in this regard  ……….   I have placed my own concerns ahead of all other considerations.

Did you notice that this phrase is open-ended?   “Love does not seek its own   --  its own what !!??    Ah, and such is the brilliance of the expressed thought.   Love does not seek its own (fill in the blank.)   Love does not seek its own passion, its own opinion,  its own judgments,  its own good  ..  and I could go on and on, of course.

Are you aware that this passage is addressed to the church?   The “love” passage is not directed to private relationships (marriage and the like).  Nope !!  Rather, it is Paul’s inspired advice as pertains to “conflict resolution” within the church and among brethren.    It is the code of conduct for such as TT  --  whether I am a good example of same or not !!

Your attitude shift has encourage me , and perhaps other , to go and do likewise.

Thanks,

jd
