Do it in the name of God and you have a special type of defense. But we must recognize the religion isn't evil, tradition isn't evil, man is.

That idea is the foundation of our gospel. Man is fallen and needs a savior. Lennon's song refutes that foundation and appeals to man's desire to deceive himself and to lay the blame for our sinful state on someone else, in this case, all religion.
