I think I found my problem - an adjustment to the classpath is required.
Previously I thought that the class was not getting compiled, but when I
checked again, it is there.  Don't know how I missed it previously.  Note:
the one thing that Gump does override in the build definition is the
classpath - that's how I can compile against the latest versions of
dependencies and not simply against the jar files that are checked in.

Meanwhile, answers to other questions that came up:

> gump uses jikes?

Gump will use whatever the default compiler is defined for your project.
Late last year, about a 1/4 to 1/3 of the projects used jikes, now I'm not
aware of any that do.

> jikes is a must if you want to compile *all* Jakarta projects
> in one day :-)

I compile a lot of Jakarta projects in a little over an hour and half on a
Pentium II running Redhat 7.1 with Sun JDK 1.3.  The part that takes the
longest time is the cvs updates.
