Could this be related to the fact there is a NOTES file in the root directory (and perhaps windows doesn't allow a file named NOTES and a directory named notes).
I am using winCVS 1.2 and it failed for me with: cvs [update aborted]: could not chdir to notes: Invalid argument HTH.
