I also tried using Maven today (grabbed from CVS May 31, 2002) and
received the same error as Henning P. Schmiedehausen: "BUILD FAILED"

run-tests:
[echo]
Running all JUnit tests
BUILD FAILED
/opt/maven/plugins/test/build.xml:561: Could not create task of type:
junit. Common solutions are to use taskdef to declare your task, or, if
this is an optional task, to put the optional.jar in the lib directory
of your ant installation (ANT_HOME).

I've had this same result under:
Windows 2000
Sun JDK 1.4.0
Ant 1.4.1
JUnit 3.7
and
RedHat 7.2
Sun JDK 1.3.1_03
Ant 1.4.1
JUnit 3.7
