$mavenDirectory in ${maven.home}/examples/build.xml

I found this beatuful build-project.xml file in ${maven.home}/examples.
I figured the purpose of that was to be able to create a new project calling

ant -f build-project.xml -Dtargetdir=/the/dir
Thing is, it copies build.xml from the same directory and there is a
variable called $mavenDirectory there that is not replaced.
Should this be parsed by velocity?
