What are the contents of your $ANT_HOME/lib directory? You need to have Xerces2 installed in order to use the maven:validate-pom target. It definitely seems like you have some other SAX classes in your classpath somewhere. Try unsetting your classpath before you run the target. What version of Java are you using? What version of Ant?
