I had this problem on Suse 7.3 with the same jdk..It bugged me for a week..It started out of the blue... There's a sun bug on this (I don't have it on hand atm...check out google)
The solution is to switch to jdk1.4.1beta.. That worked for me and fixed a few other bugs to boot... Hope that helps...
