This is xerces not being found. I can't see why from the output and stack 
trace.

$CLASSPATH isn't used by Maven.

Of these, I've not personally tested dist and pom:validate. All others 
work for me on 1.3.1->1.4.1_01

The only thing I can think of is you have a bad pull from CVS.

Has anyone else had problems on 1.4.0?
