Except that rm -rf would destroy other files that existed, but were not part of the tar?

well, that would assume that you wanted to keep files no longer in the source directory. I guess its appropriate for some, and not others.

I'm still a little lost as to the benefit of -U (ujnlink before extract)? I'm sure there's a good reason to use it, but I'm not sure of the situation that warrants it?
