My bet is that the b7 is unusable, because it had SNAPSHOT jars, and the current SNAPSHOT jars are totally uncompatible with the b7 maven. So, you should checkout the CVS HEAD, and build it.
I sincerely hope that you are wrong, because that would be a criminaly braindead thing to do. I'm sure that Jason (who happens to be the release manager) can do better than that. SNAPSHOT's in deeps of maven core & plugins at release stage must always be replaced with fixed timestamp jars. Otherwise the releases would become broken *really* fast. This also applies to any other project build with maven. I'm sure that the release plugin that Jason mentioned last week will assist release engieers with this.
