If you are asking how to get a "processed" home page without having to
specify the entire path to the template, perhaps you could use a plain HTML
home page with a META tag that redirects the browser to the "real" path
(...xxx/servlet/xxx/template/Index.vm).
Just a thought - I haven't tried this myself.
