You're using mod_rewrite to build those better looking URLs right?  If I
could just figure that damn thing out I'd be happy!  Any hints on what you
did?

Well, this is a good explanation.

URL can be seen as additional navigation help.
 For example, you can look on this URL
from russian news site:

http://www.lenta.ru/most/2001/11/19/glass/
topic ------------->^^^^
date ------------------>^^^^^^^^^^^
story name ----------------------->^^^^^^^

This provides good visual clue, and sometimes allows
faster navigation ( if he likes to see all stories
from topic area "most" for november 2001 he will just
remove "19/glass" )

Another issue that it's better to not to reveal
what's working behind the scenes.
