Hotspot is the default for jdk1.3.1_0x+ versions if I am not mistaken. To run in server mode pass the parameter -server as the first parameter to the VM. This has significant effect on how the VM deals with memory, and I have found it to be very useful with larger applications (particular on app servers like JBoss....).

Definitely. Make sure, that you run in Hotspot or Server mode. Your

problem

description sounds like you don't. Turn template caching on.
