Sean, Yeah, probably the best thing for you would be to start with TDK 2.3 (at http://jakarta.apache.org/turbine/tdk/index.html - download link in the tutorial section). It allows you to create your first turbine app in about 5 minutes. Pretty slick.
There's a turbine 2.1 to 2.2 migration doc, and then a 2.2 to 2.3 migration doc on the turbine site, which should help you out if you need to migrate an application to turbine 2.3. Finally, in WEB-INF/conf/Log4j.properties you can specify the absolute path to the log file.
