You can use ez_setup behind a firewall but you should add an environment
variable http_proxy='http://proxy_server:port' as described in the
following thread:

When you are behind an NTLM based proxy, you should start your own proxy
server that connects to the NTML proxy see http://ntlmaps.sourceforge.net/
for more details.
I'm creating a patch for the install.html and will add it shortly.
