I looked (in vain) for a python-zlib package that I could install I created the ~/.pydistutils.cfg file as you suggested I added
PYTHONPATH=$PYTHONPATH:'/home/andy/lib/python2.4/site-packages:/home/andy/lib/python2.4/site-packages/setuptools-0.6a1-py2.4.egg' to by .bashrc file (I removed python 2.3 after installing 2.4 Would this be a problem?) I am not sure what you mean by removing setuptools.deb. Do you mean "apt-get remove setuptools" ? Same problem. There are a number of messages on Google that have conflicting information on python-zlib. I also tried this uner my mac, but i Am not able to upgrade to Python2.4 - the binaries for 2.4 I installed do not work, and I do not have a C compiler for the sources. Everything works smoothly on FC2, I had a simple app running in minutes - would love to get this working at home ! Thank you very much for your time -
