I don't think so.  

It is nice when the website can use columns too, since the preferred line size
is somewhere near 70 columns (hint for you and your gmail configuration that
doesn't break long lines and send HTML to mailing lists ;-)) but it is not
essential.

I find it much more annoying when I have to move my attention from screen to
the keyboard or mouse or ... to scroll the screen to read a few lines that
would have fit the screen if it was in a liquid layout.

But, anyway, one can't always please everybody...
