Personally, if I find the TCO of owning a Macintosh much higher than the Gentoo GNU/Linux build I've been using. Then again, I'm a geek that can support his own hardware.
I would much rather use Mac OS X than any other operating system, but the initial cost is far too great when I can buy a 2.4GHz AMD64 lapop w/ 1280x800 LCD, 100GB HD, 1GB ram, etc. for around $1,000 CDN. Compare that to the cheapest MacBook starting at $2,299 CDN w/ 1.8GHz, 512MB RAM, and 80GB HDD... I can buy two laptops and a dock for the same price. No matter the OS I'm using, if it runs X11 applications (and the big three all do - Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X) I'd use the same development environment on all three. Konsole (or other terminal), Kate, and either a KHTML-based or Gecko-based browser. As it stands I also VMWare Windows to test IE. No operating system other than GNU/Linux with KDE has been able to offer me the level of integration and intercommunication I need to do my job as efficiently as I do. Having built-in support for 30+ protocols in all applications (a common example is dragging a file from Konqueror to Kate which loads it over SFTP automatically) is too vital for my workflow. Windows, of course, doesn't even compare when I have to have a file manager like FileZilla AND a programmer's editor that understands FTP/SFTP seperately, etc. On a Macintosh I would run KDE for my development apps, while DTP and PIM would be all Apple. Pages is so darned -pretty-! > Ultimately you should just use the platform that suits you best. Our office envornment is very strange - my boss runs the same build of Gentoo as I do on my laptop, but spends 90% of his time in a VMWare Player session running Windows. He does it for the combined stability and web development capabilities as I use (using web browser, e-mail, programmer's editor, and file transfer systems under KDE) while developing Windows and Macintosh applications in Windows. (Omnis, if you've heard of it.) When using Linux it helps to be a renaissance geek. :D - Matthew's 2p --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "TurboGears" group.
