I'm thinking that probably the best thing to do wrt the email field is 
to simply remove the alternateId and make it an optional field.  That 
way it's there if people want it (and many do, I'm sure) and is not in 
the way in apps for which it is not appropriate. 

If I do that, is it going to cause problems anywhere you can think of in 
Identity?

BTW, though I believe I was quoted as someone having problems because 
"Identity is too much" I wish to stress that I would be quite happy with 
Identity with just this one minor change.
