I tried the test program and it failed for me on MySQL 4.1.15-1 from the Debian package in testing. The config of MySQL is largely unchanged from the defaults it comes with in Debian.
Matthew, did you try the test program and it worked? can you send me your mysql config? I have no problem with unicode other than this cutting of text, the app easily shows all unicode data perfectly. Which is what your screenshots show.
