Thanks Joost! The shared sites latency should be fairly low say under a second min and 20 seconds max extra .I'm thinking around 15-20 people max would be logged in maximum on one site. It might not see 5 max in almost all cases. Since I don't know how to scale TG and mysqldb beyond my vps I'll have to trust the machine I'm on can handle it.
I bet you are correct about using polling. Is it done using a callback, or with a wait call? The DOM swap looks pretty simple at first even. The messages could be timestamped with time() then too. It'll probably take me two days minimum to do it. I hope I'm wrong and its a day or the magic hour.
