Then I think there absolutely needs to be one place that does hold this
monster. I understand what your saying, but gears is such an
amalgamation of tools that there is no guarantee someone wants to go
through the docs and tools in any particular order. Also, when you are
first learning the tools, you don't know what the tool is or where it
will be, you just know what you want to do. So I got frustrated because
when I wanted to *do* validation, I had no idea I needed to click on API
reference to find it because I had no idea it was done with a
decorator.

I must humbly disagree here. A warning would be fine and much better
than not being able to find the info. I don't think there is any reason
ever to make it hard to find something, and I think that is the biggest
weakness of the current doc situation. The current organization of the
front doc page confused me more than anything else. Put everything up,
and if it's not tested, or may have version problems, put a clear
disclaimer ( something clearer than "official" and "unofficial", which
are rather vague terms. )

I think to do what you want, it would be better to have two indexes for
different approaches. One that is organized user guide style as you have
envisioned, and one that is a giant reference to search through ( like
the Mochikit index ). The front page can link to both these approaches.
It's like the difference between and index and a table of contents in a
book. Both would be really helpful.

My two cents! =)
