It's working OK for me using postgresql or sqlite as the backend -- but
I couldn't get utf-8 working with mysql as the backend.  SQLObject just
wasn't producing the right code to make it happen.  Are you using
mysql? If you just followed the tutorial, I suppose you're using
sqlite... and that should work...
