Ok, my strategy for this particular problem is to put an element like
<input type="hidden" name="pagetype" id="pagetype" value="${pagetype}"
/>
somewhere on your layout page. Then just do (in javascript):
function getPageType() {
return $('pagetype').value;
}
and you're set.
