This is, IMHO, the worst problem with Flash. There are other problems,

Yep, that's true, unfortunately: if you're relying on some newer (>= version 8)
Flash features, you're practically shutting out Linux users, until Flash
version 9 has had time to spread.

And the Shelf works great with Flash 9 for Linux... I've installed it just to
take a look at Kevin's widget. And it is a very nice widget!
Congratulations, Kevin!

Another fine example of the conclusion that with proprietary software you're at
the mercy of the vendor's release policy and that just doesn't do in a
distributed, heterogeneous environment (i.e. the web).

What are the free tools to develop new "widgets" like this on the Flash side?
If there aren't many -- or any --, then we'll also be just consumers and never
producers or innovators with this kind of technology...

Also, Flash is never installed out-of-the-box on most Linux distros so that
constitutes another accessibility hurdle.

Indeed. But it isn't just a Linux problem. *BSDs also suffer with that (and
it's worse for them since you have to enable Linux emulation and install the
Linux package).
It's a small fraction of the market -- I believe that non-Windows browsers on
the net are somewhat near 10% -- but those are potential clients to your
services or your client's services.

I remember seeing something like this Shelf done only with CSS + JavaScript.
This is a better approach (and lighter ;-)).

I dunno how it is on Windows, but I couldn't use Ctrl-W to close the tab with
the demo (this annoys me a LOT!) and had to reach the touchpad to close it...
Another usability loss.
