To have the system configured to use Unicode everywhere I can't because I'm on OpenSuSE here. You'd probably be able to do that by adding LC_LOCALE and LC_COLLATE and LC_... variables on your profile (don't forget about making it visible to X if you use it on this machine, so you might be better setting them on ~/.xserverrc -- or something like that).
