I use Kate under Gnome, it works as well as any other text editor :-)
You just have to tweak KDE theme settings a bit so that it doesn't
look too much out-of-place.

As for the "crippled gedit", I must retract this statement, I've just
tried it again and it seems much more usable than it used to be.
There's still not much configuration possible, though.
