Such a layer usually isn't really needed when dealing with something as
(relatively) simple as REST services.  If I was doing soemthing like this
though, I would probably write a wrapper (probably just a convenience
function) around urllib or whatever http client library I was planning on
using.  Writing a truly generic interface might be pretty tricky, but
writing one specific to your application should be pretty simple, I think.

Give it a shot and let us know how it goes.
