Ant, what version of maven are you using?   Can you retry with 2.0.4?    
This error is strange considering it's exactly what the maven docs SAY to 
run.

After the failure, can you go to the sunjars dir and cat the build.xml 
file that the pom is calling and try running the commands from the 
command line and see if they work?

Actually, can you go to the sunjars dir after the failure and run:
ant -DlocalRepository=~/.m2/repository installJars 
That's all maven is supposedly doing.

It's very strange.  I have NO idea how it thinks "com.sun.xml" is a task.
