I'm sorry about that. It's these new varifocal spectacles: even after more than two weeks, I still can't see properly with them! When I realised I'd posted using the non-existent e-mail address <[email protected]>, I first posted an apology, to whoever might be using that address, thinking my post would be bounced to him. But my apology itself bounced. I then waited, until I saw that a message I posted later (about complex numbers) was included in the digest. This led me to conclude that my earlier message had (as I expected) not been accepted by the mailing list (because I didn't register using that address). So I reposted it, thinking that I had been care- ful, considerate, and patient.
