There are two ways to approach this: 1) Think of something that you'd like to have, personally, and start work on it. Here you'll have a real passion and benefit. 2) Tackle something that everyone does. Here you'll have a lot of examples and people will likely quickly understand your goals. For #1 I can't help, though I recommend the attempt, but for #2 I recommend small games. A blackjack game or a computer that can play tic-tac-toe with you are great ways to work on a well-defined problem that won't take forever.
