Did you install packages libusb-0.1-4 and libusb-dev?
Did you recompile the daemon from scratch after that?

Normally the library should be located in /lib
and /lib is anyway in the search path of ld

What gives "ldd tuxdaemon"?

Certainly not!
Once you're under 64bits libs you've to stick to 64bits!
(unless under a chroot/vserver/...)
