Since the fall of the Taliban, Afghanistan has been rebuilding itself and reviving democracy. With its radio station and two magazines, one of them aimed at women, the press agency Killid Media is a real media phenomenon. This new media, dedicated to fighting ignorance and illiteracy, is promoting a message free from the constraints of tradition and setting the foundations of modernity. As it follows the distribution of these popular magazines across Kabul, Afghan Chronicles explores the struggles within this changing society and paints a touching picture of a land that is a work in progress, dreaming of a better future. Tentang Dominic Morissette : Dominic Morissette Director Dominic Morissette's first love was photography. Then he discovered film. Since 1991 this inveterate cinematographer has shot documentaries all over the world. >From 1998 on he travelled the coasts of Canada and South Asia filming the lives of fishermen. This ethnographic approach gave him many contacts which promoted dialogue between far-flung communities and enabled knowledge to be shared across the globe. His travels were depicted in a travelling exhibition shown in Canada in 2000. In 2003, with Catherine Pappas, who has always worked with him, he co-directed Les derniers chasseurs du petit havre, a feature-length film nominated for a Jutra prize for best documentary. The work depicted the daily lives of Nova-Scotian fishermen and their struggle to survive the moratorium on the cod fishery. In 2003-2004 he gave video and photography workshops to Afghan civilians as part of the programme of the Afghan Peace and Democracy Act (APDA), an organization dedicated to promoting peace and a democratic process in Afghanistan. Over seventy young people benefited from his professional experience, and seven films were the result of this fruitful collaboration. The venture also resulted in an exhibition of photos taken by Afghans, which was presented at the Mumbai World Social Forum in India in 2004. In August and September of that year Morissette also co-ordinated a communications campaign for the eighteen candidates in the Afghan presidential election, and was responsible for the entire visual side of the campaign. At the same time he became interested in environmental issues and especially in the social impact of the ecological disaster that occurred in the Indus delta in Pakistan. The photographs that were the outcome of this project were presented in an exhibition shown in Asia, Canada and Europe. In 2005, in collaboration with the French NGO DIA, he gave video and photography workshops in Yemen. An exhibition of photos from his many trips to Afghanistan was presented in Montreal in February 2007.
