Aiken could admit to having cured polio and it would not make me a fan of his music, but his recent comments, including this, have increased my respect for him personally, and reading it was not a waste of time.
I would never criticize a young person for not knowing how to handle the media glare. I do think that he probably could have come out of the closet some time before this, and the sooner he had done so the better it would have been. It is naive to think that a popular entertainer is going to keep the broad outlines of their personal life private - the public is going to know if the entertainer is married, seriously dating etc, and if they have a baby who the other parent of the child is. I would appreciate it if more entertainers would just leave things at identifying the basics of their personal life and not give out the gory details. And if more gay entertainers did that (both revealed who their partners were, and declined to go into private details) we would more quickly get to the point where the public just accepted it without much further comment (well, I will admit to some occasional private speculation about Portia de Rossi, but perhaps the details of those speculations are best left to myself).
