I'm not sure what it means to say that she was okay - in both the open
and the Update bit all she really does is stand by and let the SNL
cast do material in front of her. I guess that does show that she is a
good sport to an extent, though not in say, Janet Reno terms. She is
real comfortable in these kinds of settings, which is such a contrast
from her presence when answering questions. If I had only seen her in
this context I guess I would see her as somewhat likable, though I
could do without the white girl chair dancing.

I was pretty sure she was not going to play along directly with very
much in the way of self-parody, not because she doesn't have a sense
of humor (she might) but because that is not the kind of humor that
goes over with the kind of people who like her. But I do see now the
reason why they wanted her to do this - it will give moderate
republicans who still are looking for a reason to tolerate her a
chance to say that she made fun of herself when she really didn't,
while still allowing her to go before the true believers and take a
condescending tone. I still think she should have held out for
something more biting towards the liberal elite than a stale Steven
Baldwin joke, but maybe she wanted to make sure she didn't come off as
strident.

I wonder if there is any truth underneath the joke that Palin refused
to do prepared material because she thought it was unfair or beneath
her - they did repeat it twice. Probably not, though it is not
impossible they pitched her a few things that she refused and this was
the best they could come up with. In the end SNL clearly was hoping
mainly to use the extra attention to pump up 30 Rock, and that seemed
to be all they really cared about.

As I suspected, Tina Fey may have gone to the well once to many times
- and it really wasn't even necessary, since they were only on screen
together for a second (I had to freeze my TiVo to get a look at the
two of them side by side). While Fey is clearly the hottie and Palin
the nottie, it does confirm that the Governor does sport the primo
rack.
