It's one of the things that Life on Mars got pretty right in its UK incarnation. Just because it's set in 1973, that doesn't mean everyone should be driving around in 1973 model cars. Most cars on the road - particularly at that time - will date from the previous 5/10 or even more years. Likewise, even a hit radio station today doesn't just play 2008 music.
