Joanna Lumley has been popping up a lot in my little studio apartment,
recently. Earlier in the week, I watched an episode of the Ian McShane
series "Lovejoy," in which she appeared as a semi-recurring love
interest. I was telling someone I work with about "Absolutely
Fabulous" (or trying to... it is a tough show to briefly sum up AND
make as funny as it was). Last night, I was almost drunk enough to
watch the last of the non-Martin "Pink Panther" movies in which Lumley
plays a journalist, but I wisely opted to crawl to bed and pass out
instead.

This morning, I'm catching up on podcasts and a few of them mention
Lumley's current role as a political activist, specifically her recent
meeting with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. As I did some
digging into what is going on across the pond, I couldn't help but be
reminded of the "Final Cards" trilogy featuring the character of
Francis Urquhart. There would appear to be a lot of backroom dealing
going on over there.

But I am also reminded of a certain Alaskan governor who was recently
trotted out by America's conservative party. Several references are
being made in the British press to Lumley's ass-kicking role in "The
New Avangers" TV series, really emphasizing her body more than her
mind. She would seem to be another woman whom conservatives want to
hold up (perhaps "prop up" is a better phrase) to the press and the
citzenry as the appealing side of conservatism. Key differences
between the governor and Lumley are that Lumley has accomplished
something in the world of national politics, Lumley was once a Bond
girl, and, if you hold your ear up to Lumley's, you won't hear the
ocean.
