I, for one, hope this ends up being nothing but some coke-headed Wall Street analyst's pipe dream. Apple has quite a few swings-and-misses when it comes to consumer products; the iPod was their first non- computer product to hit the mainstream, but everyone forgets their QuickShot cameras, the Pippin video game console, the Macintosh TV...I'm an Apple Fanboy and apologist, and even I acknowledge that they're not all gems.
Making and marketing a TV would put the company in an over-saturated market with questionable profit margin (particularly as we approach the holidays). Who would pay the supposed "Apple Tax" when there's a Sharp Aquos or Panasonic Meredith Viera that will do the same basic thing? Plus, there are the customer service headaches to overcome - with a computer or an iPhone, if you have a problem, you can bring your item into the Genius Bar at an Apple Store - who's going to want to schlep a 65lb TV to the mall for support? Personally, I'd prefer to see Apple develop the AppleTV product into something more robust - add HD-DVR functionality to rival TiVo (or license TiVo's software), build in easy connectivity to existing iTunes libraries and web-based media (like HULU!), and give it a competitive price point. That's a box I'd buy.
