When I was in high school in 1982, I traveled from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh to attend a speech and debate tournament at Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School, which is right next door to WQED. Because they were pressed for space at the high school, my event was held in a conference room at the TV station, right across the hall from the "Neighborhood of Make Believe" studio. This was over the long Thanksgiving weekend, so there was no production going on. Thus there was no supervision as I (and about a dozen other students) explored all the ins and outs of the Neighborhood set. In the corner of the studio sat Mr. Rogers' front porch; down the hall, we could see Mr. Rogers' kitchen cabinets sitting on their own in another studio.
It was quite a magical place to be for a teenager, not that far removed from his days watching his favorite neighbor.
