The more I think about this story, the more I think we need to push for new legislation regarding broadcast journalism.
In much the same way we have giant warning labels on cigarettes, the news outlets should be required to put a giant warning label (I'm thinking it should cover 2/3 of the screen) whenever it reports something that hasn't actually been verified. And, since there are so many blind people with televisions who might not see the warning, I think any anchor who reports unsubstantiated rumors or innuendo must do so only after having taken a swig of helium so his or her voice is disproportionally higher and (as studies have shown) less trustworthy. With these warnings in place, we can continue to have a free and open press, but the public at large will quickly realize that our free and open press is comprised mostly of talentless boobs.
