Actor Ken Howard, who is just coming off a recent Emmy win, has been elected the new president of the Screen Actor's Guild. Howard was declared SAG president late Thursday. The 40-year veteran of stage and screen is best known for his starring role in the series The White Shadow. The 65-year-old actor, who just captured an Emmy Sunday night for his supporting role in HBO's Grey Gardens, takes over the reins from Alan Rosenberg, who became a divisive leader during his two terms. Rosenberg took a hardline in negotiations with the networks in 2008 and in early 2009 and distanced SAG from its sister union, AFTRA (American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). More than half of AFTRA members are also members of SAG. Howard campaigned on a platform that included a merger with AFTRA. "Despite the sharp differences that those of us active in guild affairs sometimes have over strategy and tactics, we need to continually remind ourselves that we're all on the same team, fighting for the same thing — and by pulling together, we'll only grow stronger," Howard said in a statement released Thursday. Howard, who will have a two-year term at the 120,000-strong union, said he will also reach out to other unions such as the Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America. Rosenberg had decided not to seek a third term and had backed Anne-Marie Johnson in the race.
