He absolutely tapes the cold open after the monologue.  While Craig could go 
off stage after the cold open and back in for the monologue, I think it would 
be really hard to get the audience applause they do if it was the second time 
they saw Craig.

Also, they move the desk out after the monologue (you may have seen show promos 
with Craig on the desk as it moves into place), and it's the rare cold open 
where you don't see the desk.


AFAIK, when Letterman does cold opens, they've always been off the set (and 
probably pre-taped).

I've been meaning to ask about that - does Craig actually tape the
cold open AFTER the actual monologue?  Or did he just KNOW the joke
was going to bomb?
