Ebert, no surprise here, has the story. http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20100226/PEOPLE/100229986
Short version - there still some processing to do of his voice (which they're sourcing from DVD commentary tracks) for various tones. Not phonetics, but whether he's calm, excited, or enthusiastic. There's honest speech synthesis going on, but they need a huge sample of high-quality audio and a fair amount of time to prime the pump, so to speak. I've no idea if there will be an "After the Show" segment involving Ebert or not. I went ahead and recorded it, and just watched it (until the end of the Ebert part, it looked like the rest was just celeb interviews so I stopped. If anyone can tell me if there was more Ebert later in the show I would appreciate it. Even Oprah could not ruin this though, it is a really great story, and I admit to getting a little verklempt when Ebert announced he was cancer free. I did not hear why he can't used the Ebert voice synthesizer all the time yet - is it not fully operational? The reaction of his wife when she heard his voice again was pretty cool. I am going to see the remaining Best picture and actor/actress films that I have not yet seen this weekend - I hope and pray that Ebert was wrong about the best actress category. -- TV or Not TV ....
